Zinfandel or Primitivo? Tasting in Brighton

April 3, 2009

Zzinfandel festival posterinfandel happens to be one of my favourite grapes – a good example (often Californian) has the ideal balance of richness, tannin and lush fruit. Just do not confuse it with the sugar water which is Pink or Blush Zinfandel.
Primitivo is a southern Italian grape, thought to be a close relative of Zin, and possibly brought over from Italy to the USA in the 19th Century, I like Primitivo too, but have yet to find an example which hits all the buttons in the same way as top Zin does.

Hence my interest in another tasting from the Butlers Wine Cellar in Brighton on 03 April 2009 which will feature these two grapes (£20)

I may have underpriced this tasting! This will be as far removed from a well known Zinfandel blush as we can get. Primitivo from southern Italy has often been linked with the Zinfandel grape. We will look at the similarities and differences between the two. This will be a red wine only tasting.
