A bit of a shock to find a cheaply photocopied note on the counter of my local Oddbins announcing that the store was to be converted to a Nicolas. I wondered why the shelves looked decidedly run-down of late.
Now the wine range of Oddbins might not be as eclectic and quirky as a few years ago but at least it is world encompassing; unlike Nicolas which is decidedly and totally French. Both Oddbins and Nicolas are owned by the same company – French giant Castel. I wonder why they reached this decision and how many other stores are to be converted.
A story I haven’t seen reported elsewhere and one on which Oddbins haven’t responded to my email about. On the plus side it will bring a new range of wines into easy reach for Spittoon.

Whilst welcoming the new Nicholas shop in Shrewsbury Shropshire, I was alarmed to see that you are promoting selling foie gras! This is a cruel and inhumane method of force-feeding geese and ducks to produce foie gras. It would be much appreciated if you could withdraw it from your shelves at an early stage.
We love your French wines and have been using your shops when visiting France in St. Malo. So we wish you well in Shrewsbury.
