Laithwaites is a big name in wine, but still qualifies as an independent on-line wine merchant. Tony Laithwaite was the first to realise the dream of hiring a van and tootling off to France to buy some great, but little known wines for the UK consumer, initially through the Sunday Times Wine Club. Whilst the “man and van” approach is very dated now, the approach to finding and buying wines remains much the same.

In the 1970′s we were the first merchants – of any nationality – to prospect and buy wine from the wine regions of southern France … Bergerac, Duras, Cahors, Madiran, Gaillac, Minervois, Saint-Chinian and so on eastwards. Then came other countries; Rioja, Bulgarian Cabernet, even wines from Australia that were first shipped in 1974.Bordeaux Direct was unique for only selling wines bottled by the producers; because they simply had more flavour, extra character, total authenticity and somehow anyone, even a newcomer to wine, could always taste that quality and goodness.

A highly-respected online and mail order independent wine merchant, reputedly the oldest wine club in the World, has a great following amongst both afficionados and amateurs alike.

The Wine Society is owned by its members and exists exclusively for their benefit. Founded in 1874, its aim is to introduce members to the best of the world’s vineyards at a fair price.

As a mutual, membership satisfaction is paramount; maximising profit is not. The Society’s buyers are therefore tasked solely with finding high-quality, interesting and value-for-money wines from around the world at all price levels.

The cost of a lifetime share is £40 with no annual fee or obligation.

Whilst the Society does not have a retail outlet as such, there is the Cellar Showroom at their HQ in Stevenage, where members can arrange to collect orders or just browse – and saving delivery costs.
Another interesting option is to arrange to collect your wines from the Society’s Cellar Showroom in northern France – paying French excise duty and saving even more.

Rodney Densem Wines was established in 1972 by Rodney and Margie Densem as an Independent Wine Business. They concentrated on marketing an individual and exciting collection of personally selected wines with a particularly strong emphasis on classical French styles.
