Gordons wine bar is thought to be the oldest wine bar in London (which probably makes it one of the oldest in the world!) and has been established in its present form since 1890. The bar is loved by old and young alike due to the totally unique atmosphere in which time seems to have stood still. As you enter the bar you find yourself in a room with old wooden walls covered in historical newspaper cuttings and memorabilia faded with age. Make your way to the cellar and you need to stoop to get to your rickety candlelit table – anonymity is guaranteed! If the sun is out you can also sit outside in Watergate walk and enjoy watching the world go by.

The bar is very much a family affair, owned by Wendy Gordon who is the wife of the late much loved Luis Gordon, and now looked after by Luis’ eldest son Simon.

With an extensive list of wines available by the glass and bottle from both Old and New World, the range also includes sherries, ports and Madeira. Some wines are available  for home purchase (including online at www.gordonswinebar.com)…. traditional and well priced grub…..Food comes in proper portions ranging from home made pies to wonderfully mature cheeses. Once nominated as the top London venue for ‘illicit liaisons’!

One of London’s smallest shops, we hold a much larger ambition to promote and support the finest British products and English wine, by sourcing them directly from producers and making them available in one of London’s oldest and most renowned markets, six days a week.

It is good to see English wine getting top billing with English winemakers getting recognition for the quality of their produce and offering real alternatives to traditional wine-exporting countries. It will be pasrticularly interesting  to contrast and compare wines from different English producers. Wine is often at its best against food – the Wine Pantry’s selection of English cured meats and cheeses is not yet available online – another excuse to pop into Borough Market if you are in the capital.

No online ordering or scheduled tastings as yet – although you can browse their English wines for tasting notes and at the store they have up to 20 wines for tasting by the glass!

The shop opened in July 2008 and is modelled on a ‘vinoteca’ concept. Wines by the glass are available from a rotating selection or by the bottle for retail price plus a fixed £6 corkage. Locally roasted coffee, speciality teas, bottled beers and soft drinks are also available
Most shops are laid out by country, but to navigate them you have to have extensive knowledge or know what you like. Here each shelf is based on what people come in and ask for; for example, we have a ‘Light and Juicy Reds’ and a ‘Shiraz/Syrah’ section alongside a ‘Dry and Crisp Whites’ shelf.

A well-crafted selection of wines is available supplemented by a series of regular tasting events.

An extensive range of reliable wines is on offer in the shops and online – although at the time of reviewing the website was under re-construction (September 2010) – and although the menu teasingly offered choices including Thailand and Romania, no wines or other products were available at the time .

A shame, really, that the online offering is so disappointing -  no online ordering for example . You can download a pdf of the wine list. True. the heart of the business should be a good selection and availability -  and having visited some of their shops the range is extensive and well-selected, the staff are helpful and knowledgeable.
