Recently opened in a defunct Threshers store, independent wine merchant The Whalley Wine Shop looks to have a fresh and lively approach to selling wine.

.. based in the Ribble Valley in the picturesque village of Whalley. At The Whalley Wine Shop you can buy Fine Wines, Champagnes, Local Real Ales, National Bottled Beers, Ciders, World Beers, Malt Whiskies, Premium Spirits, Ports and a good range of quality cigars. My name is Tom Jones, I’m the owner of the shop. I’m 26 years old and I have a determination and passion for wine that maybe you don’t see in people my age. We have a great team here at the shop, Neil used to be the Head Sommelier at Northcote Manor, and Dan and I have worked together in the wine business for some years. We love meeting and chatting to customers, so please do come in and say hello.

With an interesting range of wines (and other beverages) this promises to be a place worth visiting. Although the website looks good and provides a showcase for the business and products and offers delivery, there is no online shopping system – or indeed a detailed list online. Frequent tastings are offered.
The site is quite attractive visually and the range of wines selected looks to be quite good with detailed information on each wine and its region. However, the online shopping experience seems to be rather formulaic and template-driven to operate within a bigger site which also sells fashions etc.- just a little confusing if you want to get back to the wine site.

We have fantastic world wines to suit all budgets – including organic, biodynamic and fairtrade wines that you will not find in larger outlets.

We source from a wide range of small, quality-led, family-run vineyards – discover wines of real individual character.

We also feature beers from award-winning local Isle of Purbeck and Ringwood breweries and excellent regional cider.

They also offer regular tastings. I would have like to have found out a little more about the people who run the business and what guides their choice of wines!

Taurus Wines near Guildford in Surrey specialise in wines and fizz for parties - and more! [...]

Taurus Wines, in leafy Surrey, has a focus on providing wines and champagnes for parties and celebrations in Surrey and Sussex.

However, the wine list is not dominated by cheap plonk, but a good selection of reasonably priced wines and fizz from the main wine producing countries of the World. And discounts are on offer for 6 or more bottles of several Champagnes.

The “party” element is more about a Party/Celebration service – delivery and collection, ice boxes (“Eskies”) and loan of decent glasses – all things which can male life so much easier for the hosts!

The team has wide experience in the wine trade and should be able to provide you with decent advice, whether it is for an odd bottle in the shop or for planning a big bash!

In October and November 2010 they hold a number of tastings around the county: – ”

For our winter shows we have more-or-less the same wines open at each tasting and will have a mix of over 50 champagnes, wines, ports and the odd sherry for you to try. All the tastings run from 6.30pm to 10pm.” The first one is in Bramley, Surrey on 15 October 2010 - see details

There are some good tasting notes and some vineyard profiles which ate very helpful – and navigating the site is easy with a variety of menu options. With a proper shop and online ordering available this could be the place to look! The only element we could not discern was the rationale for the wines selected, as it looks to be more than “wines good for parties”!

Our wine is stored in a 17th century cowshed – hence the name Taurus (the Bull). The Cowshed is made from cotswold stone and has walls a foot thick, this means the perfect cool conditions for cellaring wine. Our shop itself (The Old cart House) is over 400 years old and is well worth a visit – there is more than ample free parking, and we normally have a bottle or two open for you to try.

Its popularity owes much to the proximity and harmony of town and festival – each has stunning features to excite and enthrall visitors providing something for everyone to enjoy – a great day out for all the family.

For 2009 – In addition to a large number of specialist food producers and suppliers there will be a tutored wine tasting each day by Karen Kitchener from Domaine de Lauroux in the Cotes de Gascogne, Southwest France.(2009)

There is also the CAMRA Nantwich Beer Festival with around 70 beers and ciders available. As in previous years, all the Cheshire breweries will be represented and there will also be beers from the surrounding areas (supporting the CAMRA LocAle initiative).

There are also two cocktail workshops run by Residence of Nantwich, one non-alcoholic for families and the other an adults only alcoholic affair.

In addition there are also tastings of the wines of Domaine Treloar from the Roussillon region of France – and tastings of both Whisky and Champagne!!

Earn youself a pint of Adnams beer and contribute to the improvement of the environment by joining in Adnam’s Coastal Clean-up in Southwold, Suffolk on Saturday 20 September 2008.

As part of our commitment to our community and the environment in 2003 we adopted a 1km stretch of Southwold’s beach between Gun Hill and the Harbour under the Marine Conservation Society’s Adopt-a-Beach scheme. This means that we clean it at least four times a year and afterwards we like to reward ourselves with fish & chips and a well-earned pint of Adnams.
Adnams offers a small ‘thank-you’ to all Suffolk Coast and Heath Beachwatch volunteers by offering them a voucher for a free pint in one of the 13 Adnams stockists that participate in the scheme.

The Worcester Branch of the Campaign for Real Ale will hold its Ninth Annual Beer, Cider & Perry Festival from Thursday 14 August to Saturday 16 August 2008 on a site in the centre of Worcester Racecourse.

Being in the heart of cider- and perry-making country there should be a good range of styles to choose from – but not only local producers will be there – from Wales, Kent as well as more local Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Somerset and Gloucestershire. The beers are even more widely sourced – from the Isles of Scilly to Scotland via Northumberland and Cumbria, not forgetting Wales and Belgium!

With over 130 real ales and ciders, including foreign beers, music, food and a family area this looks to be a fun, and well-organised event for beer lovers.

“Beer on the farm” is the unofficial motto of the Kent Beer Festival, which is held in a large barn on a working farm just outside the city of Canterbury.

Kent has a rich brewing heritage and you’ll find beers from all ten Kent breweries grouped together on the left-hand side of the barn. Other British beers are on offer at the other two bars. As well as real ale, the Kent Beer Festival also sells real cider and a wide range of mainly bottled foreign beers.

Ok so this is beer related, but I am sure many a wine lover also drinks a beer occassionally, as I do. CAMRA has just released new research showing that a shocking 26.6% of pints served in pubs are short measure by more than 5%. This is costing consumers a whopping £1.3 million every single day.

There is one pub I love to go to that really annoys me with short measures. I complained once and to say the barman was reluctant to provide a full measure is an understatement. His words were “They are always like that”!

CAMRA is taking its campaign for full pints straight to the top, by launching a national full pints petition addressed to the Prime Minister. Please add your name to our full pints petition at www.takeittothetop.co.uk.

I’m surprised though that they have launched their own petition rather than using the online one set up by No.10. Still tis better than nothing.

CAMRA has taken an advert in Monday 16th’s Guardian newspaper and another is planned for Friday 20th April. This is the first time in CAMRA’s history that they have placed campaign adverts in a national newspaper. Together we can put an end to short beer measures.

The Chiltern Valley Brewery and Vineyard, almost the closest vineyard to my home town of Henley, has been awarded a Royal Warrant of Appointment to the Queen – the first for an English vineyard.

The Warrant is given to only a few dozen businesses each year. Each has to have supplied the goods or services to the Royal Household for at least five consecutive years. The wines and beers of Chiltern are available in the Royal Farm shop in Windsor in addition to direct from the vineyard.

The company, based in Hambleden, was founded in 1980 on the site of an old pig farm.
