Harrogate Medical Wine Society was founded by Dr. Bernard Dias with a handful of colleagues in 1991.The aim of the society is to further the understanding and appreciation of fine wine through regular tutored wine tastings and visits to vineyards in many parts of the winegrowing world.

Membership of the Harrogate Medical Wine Society is not restricted to members of the medical profession and the Society welcomes wine lovers from all walks of life.The annual membership fee is £12 per person.

Barrica wines is founded, owned and run by wine connoisseur Jane Cuthbertson in 2006. Jane first became interested in wine after experimenting in home winemaking and then going to work for a local homebrew supply company. From there she went on to study wine at local colleges and Liverpool University.After spending some time managing the Wine and Spirits departments for a local family supermarket in Clitheroe and Preston, Jane eventually set up her own wine merchants business, Barrica Wines in 2006 using her 16 years’ knowledge of the industry. In our 600 sq ft wine store you will find over 700 wines, 50 bottled beers and 100 designer spirits on display – ranging from wine from £5 to £200!

In the 1970′s we were the first merchants – of any nationality – to prospect and buy wine from the wine regions of southern France … Bergerac, Duras, Cahors, Madiran, Gaillac, Minervois, Saint-Chinian and so on eastwards. Then came other countries; Rioja, Bulgarian Cabernet, even wines from Australia that were first shipped in 1974.Bordeaux Direct was unique for only selling wines bottled by the producers; because they simply had more flavour, extra character, total authenticity and somehow anyone, even a newcomer to wine, could always taste that quality and goodness.

James – I started at Oddbins, Canterbury, with absolutely no idea what the world of wine had in store for me. Ten years of tasting wonderful wines, debating distilleries and getting very excited about obscure champagne houses and above all Pinot Noir and I was ready to do it my own way.

Which brings me on to the fun stuff…

 

The reason why I’m doing this. Tasting wine after wine, picking out old favourites such as the Perrin family wines from the Southern Rhone or new wines that got us very excited, for example Boom Boom Shiraz – a layered and complex Shiraz with a label that stopped me in my tracks and is now definitely a favourite with all who tasted it, that’s what all of this is about: finding great wines and then being able to sell them at a fair price to the good folk of East Kent.

So it looks good with a fresh and open approach to wines, spirits and beers – with space being given to local produce including Kentish wines!. Proper shop. No online ordering but plenty of enthusiasm. It looks well worth a venture into the centre of Canterbury to check them out!
