Kumeu River is now widely recognised as one of the world’s leading producers of quality white wines.  No vintage  of  the ‘Estate’ or ‘single vineyard’ Chardonnays has ever scored less than 90 in the Wine Spectator reviews. I can think of no other New World Chardonnay that could make such a claim. In addition to ‘Maté’s’ Chardonnay, which already has an international reputation (highlighted by the Wine Advocate awarding the 2006 vintage 95 points), we have their other two ‘single vineyard’ Chardonnays, which were released for the first time in the 2006 vintage, ‘Hunting Hill’ and ‘Coddington’. Fergus Henderson(above) of the Michelin-starred St John, has [...]]]> Another slightly bizarre  juxta-position between poverty and excess this autumn will involve famous chefs such as Heston Blumenthal, Angela Hartnett, Fergus Henderson and Herbert Berger – who are combining their forces this October to host the celebrated Action Against Hunger Fine Wine Auction and Dinner 2009.

Fergus Henderson(above) of the Michelin-starred St John, has posed naked in a ‘wine-filled’ bath ” to capture the event’s theme of ‘turning wine into water’; illustrating that all funds raised from the event will help Action Against Hunger fight hunger and malnutrition worldwide.

The event will take place in City of London on Saturday 10 October 2009, to coincide with World Food Day on 16 October.

The Fat Duck’s Heston Blumenthal said:

I’m absolutely delighted to be a part of this amazing event. It really gives food and wine lovers the opportunity to enjoy a night to be remembered, whilst raising much needed funds for Action Against Hunger – I urge everyone to attend

Guests on the night will be treated to a Champagne reception and four-course meal, created specially for the occasion by the team of skilled chefs. The meal will be complemented by fine wines kindly donated by Hallgarten Druitt and carefully selected by leading UK sommeliers and wine experts including Peter McCombie, Master of Wine, and Thierry Tomasin, Master of Culinary Arts.

David Elswood, International Head of Wine at Christies, will host the live auction for lots including a meal for two at Ferran Adria’s three-Michelin starred restaurant, El Bulli, in Spain; a private dining experience for twelve at London’s Corrigans and two Jereboams of Felton Road Block 2006 Pinot Noir, (Central Otago, New Zealand)  worth in excess of £3,000 – and some Agent Provocateur lingerie! It is taking place at “Wine of Course”, 216 Archway Road, London N6 5AX.

By natural wines it seems they mean essentially organic wines, but they do appear to offer wines which they classify as “natural” but are not marked as officially “organic”.

Amongst the wines on taste are a Sancerre, Coteaux de Languedoc, a New Zealand Riesling, a rose Beaujolais, a Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Rioja, St Joseph and a Champagne.
