You can buy French wine from Bordeaux, Languedoc, Minervois and Côtes du Rhône.

The French wines we buy are from small independent vineyards, and you’ll find all our wines are wonderfully smooth and have fabulous flavours – we don’t deal in case fillers here. We also stock many exclusive wines, so you won’t find them anywhere else in the UK.

Interesting selection of French wines – straightforward website and easy navigation – online ordering but mainly unmixed cases of 6 or pre-selected mixed cases. No tasting dates offered.

We focus on the wines of Bordeaux and the Loire with small selections from other regions of France. We operate on below industry margins by importing the wines ourselves directly into a UK bonded warehouse and by running on minimal overheads. This means that our customers get maximum wine quality from each £ that they spend rather than pay for all the other additional costs that other wine companies have to load into the selling price.

The “beyond” includes the Loire and Champagne, but also Rhone, Burgundy and Languedoc. Website is straightfoward, with online ordering available, but personal contact is probably best.
An interesting reflection on the times, this time in the Financial Times (23 March 2009)

British wine merchants are selling fine wine back to merchants in Bordeaux and exporting it to Asia as domestic demand for the most expensive wine slumps and sterling weakens against the euro.

Tom Hudson, a director at Farr Vintners, the biggest Bordeaux specialist in the UK, said: “The trade within the UK has slowed down dramatically. . . we’re relying heavily on exports now.” He said Asia had replaced the US as a key export market.

For more see www.ft.com.

Of course the exchange rate between the Pound Sterling and the €uro has worsened considerably in recent months and this has a major impact on new imports of wine from France, Germany, Spain, Italy etc but keep a look out for older vintages and bargains – many merchants may have purchased wines from the EU at a pre-agreed exchange rate which is better than tourists can get, but it may not last long. Current rates are barely € 1.05 to the £ (March 2009).

Meantime Robert Parker and London’s Bordeaux Index are in praise of the 1990 vintage of Bordeaux:

BORDEAUX INDEX JOINS PARKER IN HIS LOVE OF 1990 VINTAGE

World renowned wine critic Robert Parker has revealed his love of the 1990 Bordeaux vintage, and Bordeaux Index has a cellar stocked with his top recommendations.

Parker praised the vintage on his new video blog on www.erobertparker.com, making it clear that he rates 1990 higher than any other vintage – except 1982 – in terms of those that have reached maturity.

Gleave added: “It’s one of our favourite vintages, and we’re delighted that Robert Parker has given his stamp of approval. We urge all wine lovers to listen to his new blog, and hear his thoughts on these great wines.”

Visit www.bordeauxindex.com for stock lists and more information on wine for drinking and investment.

The nearest I have reached was a tasting of some top St Emilion Grand Cru vintages which was unforgettable (and unaffordable!)

Wine enthusiasts sometimes look a little askance at wine investors – savouring the monetary value of the wine rather than the delights of it as a drink – although there is probably an element of envy in that. I have known several customers with impressive and expensive cellars who do get at least as much pleasure from drinking the odd bottle, as they do from the investment angle (and from lovingly admiring the rows of bottles in their cellar). But lets not forget that the value of any particular bottle rests in large measure on how the wine tastes – judged by fine palates who can assess how the wine will develop in the bottle over decades. Hence Bordeaux Index will be incorporating Michael Shuster’s Wine School, which brings together these complementary aspects of the extraordinary liquids contained in fine wine bottles.

Bordeaux Index is delighted to announce that from September 2008, Michael Schuster will be moving his famous wine school to our offices in Hatton Garden. Michael has helped to design the specialist tasting facilities on the top floor of our new building, where his school will be run from….. .Bordeaux Index prides itself on an unstuffy approach to fine wine selection and investment, demystifying the wine buying process for its clients and continuing to deliver expert advice in a straightforward way.

Michael Shuster’s book Essential Winetasting: The Complete Practical Winetasting Course (Mitchell Beazley Drink)is based on his courses, won all three major British wine book awards for the Best Drink Book 2000: The Andre Simon, Glenfiddich and the Prix du Champagne Lanson awards.

For more information on Bordeaux Index and Michael Shusters Wine School – see www.bordeauxindex.com

Just to put things into context, here’s a few facts and figues from Bordeaux Index:-

Our most popular wine for investment in 2008: Mouton Rothschild 1982 (£11,000 per case of 12 in bond)

Our most expensive bottle of wine: 1990 La Romanée-Conti – DRC; £8,000,in bond

Our most expensive bottle of champagne: 1995 Krug Clos D’Ambonnay -£1,995, in bond

The wine region to watch in 2008: Champagne

Busiest time of year for wine market: Spring/Autumn

On numerous visits to various exhibitions at London’s Olympia in West Kensington I would indulge in 2 diversions – firstly the Bristol car showroom (368 Kensington High St) where James Bond- style sports cars were on display looking fine, polished, elegant and very desirable!

Almost next door was the second treat at Roberson Wine Merchants (348 Kensington High Street W14) which provided a welcome break from the usually frantic atmosphere of the exhibition hall. This was always a delight with an impressive range of wines – yes some very classy and expensive Burgundies and Bordeaux, but always some interesting discoveries from both the New World and Old World – and usualy some keenly priced binends. I never left without a couple of bottles to manhandle on the train home together with the piles of literature you tend to amass at exhibitions.

Fifteen years ago we began the business of building up what we believe to be the finest place to buy wine in London. From the start, we knew the ingredients; a range of Bordeaux and Burgundies unparalled in all of the city, wines imported from undiscovered producers of fantastic quality and people with the knowledge and enthusiasm to champion the cause of good wine.

Today we continue to believe in the same things. As High Streets are slowly being transformed into one faceless chain we believe there is an ever-growing need for the individual and specialist store. Roberson remain passionate advocates of wines from all over the world that offer value, character and substance. As an independent we are under no obligation to buy any particular producer’s wines. We don’t offer big brands of no discernable merit other than a large marketing budget; we simply choose wines that we like, wines that speak of place and individuality.

The shop, although in modern building, nevertheless has a cool and peaceful atmosphere with stone floors and a basement where they hold regular tastings usually about once a fortnight

Good informative website with online ordering and offers.

Some highlights:

Champagne Taittinger Rose NV, save £7, £38.99 – £31.99 (A delightfully fresh and youthful pink champagne with mouth-wateringly delicate flavours of crushed wild raspberries and red cherries, perfect forearly summer as an aperitif or with strawberries. )

Vouvray AC Champteloup Vieux Vauvert 2006/07 Vouvray, 20% off, £5.99 – £4.79 (A fine, medium Chenin from the tuffeau terroir properties around the towns of Vouvray and Rochecorbon, famous for the production of these deliciously soft-textured, waxy wines.)

Bergerac AC Domaine des Eyssards Bergerac Rouge 2005 25% off, £5.99 – £4.49 (Another brilliant wine from Pascal Cuisset of Domaine des Eyssards in Bergerac.

The aim of From Vineyards Direct is simple – to bring you very special, high quality wines at prices well below traditional outlets, and to provide you with the highest level of service possible.

From Vineyards Direct is the brainchild of David Campbell and Esme Johnstone who write that their intention is to offer a small number of delicious drinking wines, principally from France, but not exclusively, imported direct from the growers and delivered to your door at the click of a mouse.

“We aim to be 20% or more cheaper than through traditional channels.”

The wine list, when we looked, numbered 38 products. Mostly hailing from Burgundy the wines include bottles from Spain and Italy too. There are a range of mixed cases too.

While delivery is free in the UK the minimum order quantity might put you off, especially as the range is so small – Minimum total order is 2 cases (24 bottles of 75cl equivalent) for the UK and 5 cases (60 bottles of 75cl equivalent) for Northern Ireland.

Women of Great Britain prepare for a collective sigh of relief, as wineSight introduces its stylish and sophisticated range of French wines, under the Sublimelle brand, targeting stylish and sophisticated ladies.

Finally, there is a company prepared to speak to women as wine connoisseurs and not winos.
Finally, there is a company prepared to call time on a male-dominated wine market.
Finally, there is a portfolio of high quality French wine targeting women who appreciate wine for what it really is – a pleasure to be enjoyed and experienced.

A team of professionals combining wine know-how and marketing expertise with export knowledge created Sublimelle by wineSight to address the individual preferences of women without relying on patronising and over-familiar marketing messages. There is no need for the jokes, images of distressed housewives or lingerie, which are so readily relied upon by other alcoholic drinks brands squarely aimed at women. Instead, wineSight prefers to let the wine do the talking.

Following numerous taste tests with women, 25 wines from key regions across France such as Bourgogne, Languedoc and Alsace, have been selected from an original list of 400, which were pre-selected by wineSight’s expert Frederic Auriol who has 20 years of wine industry experience. Sublimelle carries colourful but subtle labels providing straight-talking details such as brief tasting notes, food matching, and information about the origin of the grape variety.

The dumbing down of wine for women has thankfully come to the end of the line with the introduction of the Sublimelle range. Over the past year or so, brands for women has focused on making wine lower in calories, lower in alcohol and lower in flavour, despite the fact that more and more women have become interested in trading up to a higher quality glass of wine as a well-deserved indulgence.

We’ve all heard the statistics pointing to women buying and consuming more wine than men in many countries around the world. Studies have also proven that many women prefer smooth, supple and subtle wines offering a delicate combination of flavours, while men, especially before reaching ‘expert’ levels, tend to prefer full-bodied wines.

For women, the scent of the wine is crucial, while men focus on the palate. Women tend to seek the full wine experience: who we’re with, what we’re eating, and how we feel. Yet, the market continues to be dominated by brands aimed at men, alongside a handful of wines for women, many of which fall short of the mark when it comes to style, taste and finesse.

wineSight appreciates that there is no need to over-complicate matters: the French produce excellent wine; British women like to treat themselves to a delicious glass or two, and are impressed by taste rather than wine snobbery.

Currently, the wines are available for sale online at http://www.chateauselect.co.uk/SublimelleIntro.htm with no minimum order. Since the company’s arrival in Great Britain in November 2007, wineSight has developed relationships with some of the leading bars and restaurants in London, which are keen to capitalise on women’s increasing interest in higher quality wines on their night out.

wineSight aims to plug the huge gap in the on-trade market for stylish and sophisticated products for women that are free from snobbery and jargon – without the patronising marketing pitch. The brand Sublimelle is also proving popular with leading hotel chains and airlines as a way of reaching female customers with an exclusive and targeted offering. wineSight plans to be involved in a series of events more specifically dedicated to women from fashion shows to networking lunches and business conferences.

We generally encourage winelovers to support small independent merchants. Many of them are adventurous in stocking interesting, unusual and small-production wines which the supermarkets and larger merchant chains avoid, preferring bland branded wines suited to the mass (and often undiscriminating) market.
However, business for small merchants can be precarious financially, and from time to time some disappear. Overheads can be high and factors such as excise duty, exchange rates, transport and warehousing costs take a big chunk out of any profits.
It is always sad to see a merchant go out of business. However, there have been some recent horror stories of merchants who have disappeared with client’s money for en-primeur purchases – where you pay upfront for wine which is still in the cellars (usually in Bordeaux) which is then delivered at a later date, when the duty and transport costs need to be paid. Admittedly this applies primarily to the top Bordeaux chateaux, but for many of us this is the only way to get hold of potentially great claret without going broke ourselves.
Decanter (5 October 2007) reports that PMH Wines in Godalming seems to have let customers down by failing to pay French suppliers for wine ordered on behalf of a client. Although PMH went into liquidation in 2006, Decanter reports that the director of the company is now trading as The Wine Barrel based in Sandhurst and Aldershot (Hants). Buying “en primeur” is always risky, because you are assuming that the vintage you have purchased will be both drinkable and valuable in years to come – but you obviously have to be additionally careful who you buy from!

Bordeaux Undiscovered offers French wine and champagne made by small Châteaux “that the UK has never seen before”.

Nick, the proprietor, writes a daily Blog on topics which are food and wine related from around the world, histories and backgrounds of all sorts of wines and spirits etc and the site has useful Recipes and Cocktails. There is also an online magazine, Ladies With Bottle – which is dedicated to ladies who are interested in wine but also includes such topics as fashion, food, health and general chit-chat.

Names such as Château Chadeuil, Graves de Barrau, Château Tooumalin and Domaine Ricaud appear on the list; as they say nothing I have come across before so worthy of exploration and experimentation. Prices seem good with each generally well under £10 a bottle.

In addition to wines of Bordeaux there is a selection of champagnes from Philippe Seconde, various pre-mixed cases and, a little oddly, two Spanish wines.

The wines we choose are low production wines made by producers using traditional methods handed down from father to son/daughter over many generations. Wines which were predominantly made for the French market and until recently undiscovered in the UK.

When you share good food with friends and the occasion is accompanied by good wine what better enjoyment can you have? So let Bordeaux Undiscovered expand your choice of wines and make a contribution to your enjoyment!”

Looking at France Alsace, Champagne and the Loire all get a look in but it is the wonders of the Rhone that make the biggest splash. Each producer has an entry listing their wines while each specific bottle has a tasting note and recommendations from the Le Guide Hachette des Vins, Parker and other writers.

Plenty of interesting wines, backed up by a knowledgeable and passionate manager.
