It was our introduction, in the early nineties, to Laurent Champs, who now runs Champagne Vilmart, that made us realise that there’s more to Champagne than the big names that we’re all so familiar with.

Our knowledge of  champagne growers, and the quality of their products, encouraged us to start an online shop where we could showcase their wines. We felt that, in the same way that twenty years ago, when the UK public knew Champagne as a drink which was perceived to be produced only by a small number of big, well known names, today, even as small growers are becoming more well known, people are aware of only a select few of them.

All of our wines are special to us, great value and come mostly from smaller independent Vignerons that we know well and who have passionately cared for their terroir and vines for many generations. We focus on the wines of Bordeaux and the Loire with small selections from other regions of France. We operate on below industry margins by importing the wines ourselves directly into a UK bonded warehouse and by running on minimal overheads. This means that our customers get maximum wine quality from each £ that they spend rather than pay for all the other additional costs that other wine companies have to load into the selling price.

Happily, Pierre Hourlier Wines is owned and run by a Frenchman, Pierre Hourlier – together with son, Jean-Pierre and  wife Susan. We have travelled throughout France, seeking out lesser-known wines of superior quality – and because we are French by birth, nature and inclination, we’ve been able to discover many wines that lesser wine-merchants are simply not told about by French producers keen to keep the best for themselves!
We have developed personal contacts throughout France with those who are passionate about wines and wine-making – but we are particularly excited about the Languedoc-Roussillon area, which is producing some of the best, but least-known wines in all of France.

The website is a delight – fresh and informative and delivered with French style. The range is limited to France, but then these are the wines which they know and can recommend. The passion for wine runs in the family. “Grand Pere Lambert” my great-grandpa, used to make “Pineau des Charentes” and red wines from his small vineyards in the old town of Villedieu de Comblé (region of Poitou-Charentes). For helping their Grandad working in the field, the grandchildren would receive a glass of Pineau des Charentes.

We have been living in the UK for the past 8 years now. Bernards wine route Ltd. is a family owned shop, and we take great pride in supplying a selection of exclusive French wines to businesses as well as individuals. Our warehouse is located Nr Wrexham (North Wales), and we have our head-office established in Gwersyllt.

Many French wine regions now have an acknowledged Wine Route (Route des Vins) to help you to explore the wineries of a specific region.
