As the name suggests, an independent wine merchant situated near Swansea. South Wales.

Our aim is to be different and better than other wine merchants.

We stock a huge range of quality wines for all tastes and budgets. Our wines cover the ancient Chateaux of France, through to the new and exciting boutique wineries in the ‘New World’ such as South Africa and Australia.Our Chateau in the Medoc, Chateau Rousseau de Sipian, which itself produces award winning wines, has enabled us to source many unusual and individual wines from France and over the last few years we have broadened our search and imported some truly exceptional wines from Australia and New Zealand. The Wine Pantry at London’s Borough Market

Down in foodie-heaven at London’s Borough Market, a new venture has opened bringing together quality English Wine, Cheese and Cured meats.

A key feature of the Wine Pantry is the Tasting Room, London’ s only exclusively English wine shop:

One of London’s smallest shops, we hold a much larger ambition to promote and support the finest British products and English wine, by sourcing them directly from producers and making them available in one of London’s oldest and most renowned markets, six days a week.

It is good to see English wine getting top billing with English winemakers getting recognition for the quality of their produce and offering real alternatives to traditional wine-exporting countries. It will be pasrticularly interesting to contrast and compare wines from different English producers. Wine is often at its best against food – the Wine Pantry’s selection of English cured meats and cheeses is not yet available online – another excuse to pop into Borough Market if you are in the capital.

No online ordering or scheduled tastings as yet – although you can browse their English wines for tasting notes and at the store they have up to 20 wines for tasting by the glass!

Welsh Vineyard wins white wine award

Set near Monmouth in the Wye Valley, a vineyard only started in 2006 has achieved great acclaim for their white wines:

New Welsh vineyard Ancre Hill Estate in Monmouthshire won a Silver Medal in the Decanter World Wine Awards 2010 and Bronze in the International Wine & Spirit Competitiion (IWSC) 2010 for the same still wine – their White Welsh Regional Wine 2008 – showing the ongoing developments and success from the Welsh wine industry.

Somehat uninspiringly titled White Welsh Regional Wine 2008 this is a great achievement, because vines normally need a good few years to get established and for their roots to draw up the minerals and nutirients which make good wine interesting, and also because you would expect that there would need to be many years of trial and error to get the right vines in the right place for soil, exposure, drainage etc before quality wines can be made – with all those generations of knowledge and tradition, love and superstitiion that many French and other established winemakers insist add something to the resulting nectar!
Between April and September you can visit and buy from the vineyard Wednesdays to Sundays – and there are vineyard tours and an adopt-a-vine scheme if you want to know more. Online ordering is planned for 2011 – getting good wine made is the first priority!
Situated just off the A40 on the way to the Brecon Beacons, or on the road between the Midlands and South Wales – this could be a detour worth making!

Camel Valley’s new website

English winemaker Camel Valley has launched a new website to promote its winery tours and holiday accommodation near Bodmin in Cornwall.
On selected evenings a wine maker will personally guide you through the vineyard and winery, answering any questions you may have about the wine making process. Afterwards, there will be a fun wine tasting session, beginning with our most famous wine, Cornwall Brut. “sitting on the terrace sipping Camel Valley wine on a summer’s afternoon is magical. “

The whole family need not be mad on wine to stay at Camel Valley. The Lindos offer a private stretch of salmon and trout fishing on the River Camel and guests can cycle the Camel Trail, which runs right through the vineyard, to Padstow for lunch in one of Rick Stein’s famous restaurants. The Eden project is just 8 miles away and the glorious Cornish coastline just 10 miles.

English Wine Week at Tiltridge Vineyard

Down in Worcestershire near Upton-on-Severn (Elgar and cider country) Titlridge Vineyard is offering a free guided tour of the vines with a tasting of their wines and some local cheeses on Sunday 1 June 2008 at 12.00 noon.

Three varieties of vine are currently in production – Schönburger, Huxelrebe & Seyval Blanc – while a fourth variety, Phoenix, will be cropping shortly. England lies on the northern limits of vine production & the wines we produce here at Tiltridge are clean, crisp & fruity – typical of the English style. Our two small vineyards of 0.5 acre & 1 acre are grown on the double guyot system where the vines are pruned back to two replacement canes each winter. On average, we produce about 3,000 bottles each year, but there are large seasonal variations as the harvest is very dependent on the weather conditions each spring & summer brings.

This is part of English Wine Week, a week long celebration of English wines which runs from 24 May to Sunday 1 June 2008. However, you might need to take this opportunity whilst you can, because over on www.spittoon.biz Andrew is reporting that within 80 years England may be too hot for wine-making, which if true should mean that at some point between then and now conditions should be perfect for making great wines!!

It cannot be often that you would find a New Zealand Cloudy Bay and a red wine from Wales on the same list ! But at ND John you can discover the Sugarloaf Vineyards Deri Coch, and even on their website they state “They must be mad with our weather – but somehow they pull it off, and in some style!” – Deri Coch is a blend of Triomphe D’Alsace, Regent and Rondo varieties and has brambly autumn fruit flavours with a delicious sour cherry finish” (£8.50)

From their Eastbourne base the Sussex Wine Company are rather active on the tasting/gourmet dinner front. Their calendar brims with delights, that quickly sell out by all accounts.

We’re an Independent Wine Merchant based in Eastbourne supplying quality wines from boutique producers around the world. We have a comprehensive selection of whisky, spirits, Champagne, organic wines, and luxury goods such as caviar, foie gras and handmade East Sussex organic chocolates. We deliver to the UK and now the EU, offer free (UK) delivery over £100 and feature many discounted mixed cases. We also produce a monthly newsletter with further subscriber offers.

The range is strong on France, Italy and Australia. Other areas are a bit light but offer ‘selected quality’ – Millton Opu Riesling an organic wine from New Zealand or Quinta da Boavista Espiga Tinto from Portugal for example.

For the gourmet the deli section holds many, mostly French, delicacies plus a wide range of caviar for those with deep pockets. Glasses, gift packs and gift certificates complete a good, broad range. Nothing wrong with the website either – easily navigable, clear and with just the right level of details on the products.
